What is a troy ounce?
The troy ounce is the unit used for precious metals. One troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams. There are 12 troy ounces in a troy pound (used in bullion), which is not the same as the 16-ounce avoirdupois pound used for most other goods.
When you see "gold price per ounce" on charts or dealer sites, it almost always means per troy ounce of fine gold (24K equivalent), unless a specific karat is stated.

A standard U.S. customary ounce weighs 28.3495 grams (avoirdupois). If you weigh gold on a kitchen scale set to ounces, you are usually measuring avoirdupois ounces—about 10% lighter than a troy ounce.
